A Fun Way to Practice Ordering Numbers and Number Forms

In all honesty, ordering numbers can be a ho-hum skill to practice…

While playing a game on my phone one evening, I got a great idea for a way to spice up practice with ordering numbers while at the same time practicing place value number forms.

Nothing makes my teacher teacher go aflutter like hearing the kids tell their partners “this is fun” as they practice a skill.  This activity is one of my students’ favorites.

Here’s a video with the student directions to see how the activity is completed by students:

Set-up

After downloading this product, teachers copy the included number card sheets 2-sided in color so that answer letters are on the back.  I use thick paper and laminate for long term use! Place each card set in a baggie and place around the classroom or at a Math center.

Student activity:

I like to place students in partners to complete this, but you are the professional so organize this activity in the way that works best for you!

First students organize the number cards from least to greatest.  Then they are allowed to flip over the station number card and guess the word based on the picture clues.  Finally, they can flip the cards over to reveal if they sorted them correctly.  If they did, they write the word on the answer document.  If not, they shuffle them and try again.

If your students are like mine, they will delight in this fun, self-checking math activity. It works great for partner work, a scoot activity, math stations, and more!
