The 4th-Grade Math
Sequence of Instruction
Long-term planning for 4th grade math is a real challenge. There’s a lot to cover, and much of it takes many days — even weeks — for students to fully master (long division is a perfect example). Having a plan to teach everything before your state test is essential to setting students up for success. Here’s the roadmap I’ve honed over 30+ years of teaching 4th grade math.

Unit 1Place Value~23 days
Reading & writing large numbers, expanded form, comparing digit values, comparing & ordering, and rounding.

Parts of a group, equivalent fractions, comparing & ordering, decomposing, mixed & improper, add/subtract, multiplying unit fractions, and line plots.

And although equivalent fractions is a 3rd-grade skill, I find little carryover, so plan to spend several days on it alone. Also note that while “mixed numbers” and “improper fractions” aren’t named in the Common Core, students are still expected to solve problems using them. -
Unit 8Decimals~8 days
Modeling decimals, tenths & hundredths, mixed decimals, and comparing & ordering.

Intermittent★ A note on review & assessment
Every unit closes with at least a couple of dedicated review days before we move on — those days are already counted in the totals above. All of the calculation skills, and 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication and long division in particular, get a dedicated refresh right before testing.
You’ll notice there are no days set aside for unit testing. Rather than spending — and wasting — instructional days on stop-and-test unit exams, I track mastery with an ongoing formative assessment tool like Learning Farm, so I always know who’s got it and who needs another look without ever pausing instruction to give a test.
Day counts and timing are approximate, based on the 2025–26 school year. Every classroom’s pacing will vary.
